Aloe Scribe vs Otter

Otter is a cloud service. A bot joins your meeting, your audio goes to Otter's servers, and you pay per seat every month. Aloe Scribe does the same job on your own computer, with no bot, no upload, and no account. If you want a shared team workspace and mobile apps, Otter is the established choice. If you want the notes without sending your meetings to a vendor, that is what Aloe Scribe is for.

The real difference is where your audio goes

Otter works by receiving your meeting audio. Its OtterPilot bot joins the call as a participant, or the app records and uploads, and transcription happens on Otter's servers. That design is what makes the shared workspace possible, and it is also the source of Otter's current trouble. A federal court in the Northern District of California has allowed privacy claims against Otter to proceed under federal wiretap law, California privacy law, and the Illinois biometric law, in part because Otter's servers receive meeting audio and Otter uses recordings to train its AI. Otter's own privacy page confirms it trains its models on de-identified customer recordings, with an opt-out in settings. Separately, some universities blocklist notetaker bots, and Teams can flag or deny them.

None of that means Otter's product is bad. It means the product has a server in the middle of your meetings. Aloe Scribe removes the server. Recording, transcription, speaker identification, and the summary all run on your computer, so there is no bot for a platform to block and no vendor copy of your audio to litigate over.

Choose Otter if

  • You need a bot to attend meetings you cannot join. Aloe Scribe only records meetings happening on your computer, so it cannot cover a call you skipped. Otter can.
  • Your team wants one shared workspace with search across everyone's meetings, channels, and admin controls.
  • You live on your phone. Otter has real iOS and Android apps. Aloe Scribe is a desktop app.
  • Your organization has already reviewed and accepted cloud transcription, and per-seat pricing is fine.

Choose Aloe Scribe if

  • Your meetings are confidential. Client calls, legal, HR, security, or anything under NDA. No upload means there is nothing for a vendor to hold, train on, or produce in discovery.
  • You do not want a bot in the participant list, or your counterparties' platforms block bots.
  • You want your notes as files you own. Plain Markdown on your disk feeds Obsidian, Glean, Copilot, or whatever comes next.
  • You want speaker names that come from the audio itself, with colleagues recognized meeting after meeting.
  • You would rather not pay per seat, per month, forever. Aloe Scribe is free while in beta.

Try it on your next meeting

Download takes a few minutes, and the first transcript lands seconds after you hit stop. There is no account to create and nothing to cancel if it is not for you.
