Comparison
Aloe Scribe vs MacWhisper
These two apps agree on the big thing. Transcription should happen on your own computer, not on a vendor's server. MacWhisper is a general transcription app, and one of the best on the Mac. Aloe Scribe is narrower. It is built only for meetings, and everything in it serves that one job. Plenty of people should own both.
Same principle, different jobs
MacWhisper runs Whisper models locally and is excellent at what it is built for. Drop in an audio or video file, dictate, batch a folder of recordings, subtitle a video, transcribe a YouTube link. It can auto-record meetings from apps like Zoom and Teams, label speakers within a recording, and summarize by connecting a model you choose, including cloud APIs or a local model through Ollama. It is a mature, polished app with a fair one-time price, and if your work is transcribing files and dictation, you should probably just buy it.
Aloe Scribe only does meetings, and the meeting-specific parts are structural. The mic and the system audio are captured as separate channels, so whether a line was said in the room or by a remote participant is a recorded fact, not a model's guess. Speakers are identified acoustically while the meeting runs. You tag a voice once, mid-call, and that voice is named for the rest of the meeting and recognized again next week without tagging. When you hit stop, an on-device language model writes Summary, Decisions, Action items, and Open questions into the file. None of that requires an API key, an account, or a network connection.

Choose MacWhisper if
- Your main job is transcribing files. Interviews, podcasts, lectures, voice memos, video. This is what MacWhisper is best at, and it is very good.
- You dictate, or you need subtitles. Aloe Scribe does neither.
- You want a finished, stable app today with a one-time price and no beta caveats.
- You want to pick your own summarization model and do not mind wiring one up.
For that work, buy MacWhisper. It is worth the money, and recommending it costs us nothing because it is not the same product.
Choose Aloe Scribe if
- Meetings are the job. You want to press record, run the call, and have a finished document with named speakers and action items seconds after you hang up.
- You want speaker names handled during the meeting, not cleaned up afterward, and colleagues recognized automatically next time.
- You care whether a line was said on your side of the call or the other side, and you want that recorded as fact.
- You want summaries with no API key and no cloud option to configure, because the model ships with the app and runs on your machine.
- Your notes live in Obsidian or feed other tools, and Markdown with metadata and wikilinks saves you a step.
- Some of your team is on Windows.
